Preventive Health Checkups: Which Tests You Need at Every Age

Many serious conditions – diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, even early cancers – develop silently, with no symptoms until they are advanced. A preventive health checkup finds them while they are still easy to treat. The right tests, however, change with your age, sex, family history and habits.

For everyone, every year

  • Blood pressure, weight and body mass index (BMI)
  • Blood sugar – fasting glucose or HbA1c
  • Cholesterol profile (lipid profile)
  • Complete blood count, plus kidney and liver function tests
  • Urine test, dental check and eye examination

In your 20s and 30s

Build the habit early. Add thyroid function if you have symptoms or family history, vitamin D and B12 if you feel persistently tired, and cervical screening (Pap smear) for women as advised by a doctor. If you smoke, drink regularly or have a family history of early heart disease, ask about earlier heart screening.

In your 40s

Heart and metabolic risk rises in this decade. Add an ECG, discuss a treadmill or other heart test if you have risk factors, and begin regular eye checks for glaucoma. Women should discuss mammography, and men should discuss prostate screening with their doctor.

In your 50s and beyond

Add colorectal cancer screening, bone density testing – especially for women after menopause – hearing checks, and lung screening if you have a long smoking history. Keep vaccinations current, including influenza and pneumonia vaccines as advised.

A checkup is only useful if you act on it. Review the report with a doctor, not just a printout, and agree on the lifestyle changes and follow-up tests your results call for.
